Egypt’s food industry sector accounted for 14% of Egypt’s total exports, contributing to a whooping 24.5% of the country’s GDP, explained head of the Chamber of Food Industries in the Federation of Egyptian Industries Ashraf El-Gazairly on Saturday.
El-Gazairly noted that Egyptian food products are well-received in both local and international markets, adding that sector exports rose by 20% in 2021.
He also highlighted the significant growth of the sector over the past 7 years, with companies doubling from 4,000 to 17,000 and investments of around EGP 500 billion.
The sector provides 23.3% of Egypt’s employment through approximately 7 million job opportunities.
El-Gazairly added that the Chamber of Food Industries is working on raising the competitiveness of the sector and increasing production by attracting informal companies to join the formal economy, as well as encouraging the development and modernization of factories.
It is also pushing companies to comply with technical requirements of the Egyptian Food Safety Authority by providing technical support.

According to the chamber head, Egypt’s food industry is dealing with several local challenges in regards to agricultural production, livestock, poultry, and fish, as a result of the lack of awareness of farmers and breeders on the effects of spraying pesticides and veterinary medicines. This has led to one of the country’s most serious challenges facing food safety and the national industry.
El-Gazairly praised the Ministries of Emigration, International Cooperation, and Trade and Industry for their efforts in supporting the local industry and establishing development programs for training and development. He also applauded international aid and support, which contributed to around 20,000 training opportunities.
