TAQA Arabia Company and Voltalia Company have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Egypt's Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy.
This partnership, represented by the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), aims to develop an innovative 3.2 GW wind and solar power facility at the Zafarana site in Suez Governorate.
Located about 130 km southeast of Cairo, the Zafarana region is recognized for its strong wind patterns and intense solar irradiation, making it ideal for renewable energy production.
Originally established two decades ago as one of the Middle East and North Africa’s pioneering wind farms, Zafarana’s 545 MW turbines are nearing the end of their operational life.
This new project aims to repower the site with 1.1 GW of wind and 2.1 GW of solar capacity.
The MoU signals the start of feasibility studies focusing on technical, environmental, and geotechnical assessments to ensure the project’s viability, with results expected by December 2025.
This venture, according to TAQA Arabia and Voltalia, aligns with Egypt’s national sustainability agenda to expand renewable energy sources and promote private sector involvement.
