Trade between Egypt and countries in the Nile Basin grew by 26.3% during the first 9 months of 2021 year-on-year (YoY), with exports up by 33.7%, according to data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

Egyptian exports to Nile Basin countries recorded $1.11 billion during the period, compared to $835 million in 2020’s first 9 months.

The countries with the highest export values, accounting for 94.7% of total exports to Nile Basin countries, were Sudan with 52.7% of total exports at $588 million, Kenya with 25.4% at $284 million, Ethiopia at 7.1% with $80 million.

Top commodities exported were plastics and products at $154 million with 13.8% of total goods exported, and sugar and products at 10.8% with $120 million.

Egypt’s imports from the countries were recorded at $497 million during the period from January to the end of September 2021, compared to $442 million for the same period in the previous year.

Holding 99.1% of total imports by Nile Basin countries to Egypt were Sudan at $258 million with 51.8% of total imports, Kenya at $173 million with 34.8%, Congo at $47 million with 9.4%.

The most important commodities imported to Egypt were coffee, tea and spices worth $157 million at 31.6% of the total commodities; live animals with $143 million at 28.8 percent; grains, oil, fruits, and medicinal plants with $63 million at 12.7%.
