FM Shoukry stresses international consensus for Gaza ceasefire to UN Secretary-General

Minister Shoukry and the UN Secretary-General deliberated extensively on the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Egypt's Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, received a pivotal phone call on Wednesday from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss and coordinate efforts related to the ongoing crisis in Gaza. The call aimed to address the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip, diplomatic endeavors to secure a ceasefire for the protection of Palestinian civilians, and to facilitate the full, safe, and sustainable delivery of humanitarian aid and relief.

The Foreign Ministry's spokesperson, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, explained that during their comprehensive discussion, Minister Shoukry and the UN Secretary-General deliberated extensively on the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. They also explored diplomatic efforts seeking an immediate ceasefire to safeguard the lives of Palestinian civilians and prevent forced displacement, allowing for the unimpeded access of humanitarian assistance.

Ambassador Abu Zeid further stated that Minister Shoukry highlighted Egypt's political interactions with international parties, emphasizing the importance of building upon the international consensus. This consensus is embodied in the recent United Nations General Assembly resolution, which calls for the immediate implementation of a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, the protection of civilians, and the rejection of attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians.

In a related context, Minister Shoukry commended the balanced approach taken by the Secretary-General in managing the repercussions of the crisis and putting an end to it. He expressed appreciation for the pivotal role played by the United Nations under Guterres' wise leadership in addressing the current crisis. The Secretary-General consistently stresses the necessity of states abiding by international law and humanitarian standards.

For his part, the UN Secretary-General stressed the imperative of ending the tragic situation in Gaza and the establishment of a ceasefire. He praised Egypt's essential role in mitigating the crisis and ensuring the delivery of aid to the people of the region. Additionally, he highlighted Egypt's central role in supporting the pillars of security and stability in the area.
