Dr. Mahmoud Esmat has been appointed Egypt’s new Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, succeeding Dr. Mohamed Shaker El-Markabi in a cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. After being sworn in by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Esmat emphasized the critical role of the electricity sector as a cornerstone of national security and economic development.
Esmat outlined his priorities, which include improving the quality of electricity supply, addressing consumer complaints, and reducing system losses. He pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessor, focusing on integrating renewable energy into the grid, reviewing production and distribution costs, and employing advanced monitoring technologies.
"There are directives from President El-Sisi to fully focus on enhancing the quality of electricity supply and the level of services provided to citizens," Esmat stated. "We aim to ensure stable and high-quality power supply, which is essential for the nation's economic and social progress."
To address power outages and secure high-quality electricity supply, Esmat plans to coordinate with relevant authorities and adopt the highest standards of productivity and efficiency. His approach includes ensuring high-quality electrical services and removing obstacles that might affect service delivery to citizens.
Dr. Esmat, a native of Cairo, holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Cairo University and a Ph.D. in Electrical Power Engineering from Dalhousie University, Canada. His career began as a faculty member at the Faculty of Engineering, followed by roles as an engineer with the Suez Canal Authority and shipbuilding companies in Ismailia and Port Said.
From 2013 to 2014, he served as Chairman of the Cairo Airport Company, and from 2014 to 2016, he was Chairman of the Egyptian Holding Company for Airports and Air Navigation. Since 2016, he has been Chairman of Cairo Glass Manufacturing, specializing in the glass industry within the Tenth of Ramadan industrial zone.
