Over the past eight years (from July 2014 to June 2022), the Egyptian state has achieved significant milestones in energy security in the electricity sector. It has overcome the problem of power outages, and during this period, it transformed from a deficit in energy to a surplus, resulting from the numerous projects implemented. As a result, Egypt has advanced by six places in the "Renewable Energy Attractiveness Index."

In terms of electricity production and generation, the Egyptian state succeeded in converting the deficit of electricity generation, with an average daily deficit of 6,000 megawatts in 2014, to a surplus of 13,000 megawatts in 2020.

This was achieved by adding around 28,000 megawatts of electricity capacity, equivalent to twice what was available in 2014. The total added capacity was approximately 31,000 megawatts of traditional and renewable energy over the past eight years.

This has completely ended the phenomenon of "power outages" through the construction of several power plants and the development of existing ones. A total of 48 projects have been implemented for electricity production from traditional sources, in addition to the development of transmission and distribution networks.

Moreover, 375 projects for electricity transmission have been implemented, as well as electricity distribution projects, with investments of EGP 112.5 billion. Furthermore, the first automated control center for the distribution network has been established, as part of efforts to transform the current network into a digital one.

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development's report also highlighted the role of the "Decent Life" initiative in improving electricity services in the Egyptian countryside.

Currently, projects to develop electricity networks are being implemented for about 1,477 rural areas, serving the residents of 1,477 villages within the first phase of the initiative, with a population of more than 17 million citizens.

In the fiscal year 21/2022 (only), approximately EGP 10.5 billion was disbursed for the implementation of electricity network development projects within the "Decent Life" initiative.

As a result of these achievements, the Egyptian state has strengthened its position in the field of energy, and this will attract further investment to the sector. The Egyptian government's efforts to develop the electricity sector have positively impacted the economic growth and the standard of living in the country.
